architection was awarded the contract to design and build one of only 13 proton beam therapy centers in the U.S. at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington D.C.. Certificate of Need approval from the D.C. State Health Planning and Development Agency was received in May of 2013. The design process is complete and construction is expected to begin in September of 2014. The facility will be a 10,000 s.f. renovation and a 9,880 s.f. addition to the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. The design process was challenged by very tight site conditions. Ultimately, though, the facility will greet visitors with a new entrance, lobby and meeting room, as well as enhancing the treatment options available to their patients with a new cutting edge Proton Therapy Treatment Suite.
